A Reason to Smile

So there's this neighbor. She's always a bit cold when we see each other in the hall or pass each other coming in out of our building. Since I never get a smile or small talk from her, I stopped smiling when I saw her. The other night we walked up the block and into our building together. Instead of keeping my head down and hurrying inside, I smiled and made a comment about the weather. To my surprise, she smiled back and got pretty chatty.

It might seem like a small exchange but it got me thinking. It was so easy for me to just be nice. And how that I was, I don't waste time wondering why my neighbor isn't friendly when we see each other.

Because ain't nobody got time for that. Lesson learned: you never know what's going on with someone so give them the benefit of the doubt and always smile.
