Put a Plant in It

5/27/2014

Succulents. The (pretty) much easiest plant to care for. Ever.*

I don't have any time. I have negative time. Have you seen this video? That's me. But that's not to say that I don't desire some semblance of a put-together yard. You know...one that has actual living flowers and plants growing in it.

In previous years I barely batted an eye at succulents. But these days they fit in as a significant part of the Southern California lifestyle. Sure, they have become kind of trendy. But with good reason. They are simple, understated, green and many have bright colorful blooms. And they are relatively easy to care for. They still require attention and water, but you won't be beholden to endless pruning and many are hearty enough to withstand swings in temperature. Plus, they show a great resilience to bugs or other pesky creatures that might have a certain affinity towards your roses for instance.

Anyway, I could go on singing praises, but in the meantime here are a few random tips about succulents.

1.  Water them frequently during the warmest parts of the year when they are in their
growing phase. I usually do once a week and always make sure to do a thorough soak.

2. Succulents like light, but try to avoid the hot, midday sun. Most of mine are half sun and
    half shade.

3. Succulents generally like gritty and even slightly sandy soils. They do sell a special
potting mix for succulents at garden centers, but you can also make your own mixture
    of sand and dirt.

Indoor succulents are a whole other category, but here are some great shops to find a few:

The Zen Succulent / Shop Succulents / 5 Star Succulents

My white pots are from IKEA, but I also love these and these.

*Succulents can't be ignored, but I've found them to be pretty easy going, which is what I need right now! ;)

Your succulents look lovely! Believe it or not, my husband has killed his fair share of cacti, so I think I'll be refraining for awhile, but yours are so chic!

I have been a bit late to the succulent trend also, but in the last few months I have been gravitating to them so much! Now we have a good amount by our patio and also in our kitchen. It is perfect for me that they dont need to much love and attention - I have had some bad luck with other plants..ha!

I love how you have arranged them up against the wall here, such a perfect picture! And also those blue planters, gorgeous!

I just found your blog and am excited to follow along! xx Nan

I brought home some succulents once, and my blackthumb killed them! They're so lovely though - I may have to try again this summer :-)
