Behind the Business: TheStylist LA

3/12/2014

There's always a lull in parties and events in the beginning of the year, but the invitations for weddings, bachelorette parties, and showers just started rolling in ... and I need to pick up some party dresses immediately! For my wedding, I turned to TheStylist LA for the dresses I wore to my bridal lunch (For Love and Lemons) and rehearsal dinner (Parker). I was in so many photos that weekend that I wanted something special for each event but knew I wouldn't necessarily wear the dresses again, so I didn't want to spent a lot.

I was so impressed by my experience with TheStylist LA and especially by the brand's founder, Emily McDonald, that I chatted with her about her experience starting her company for our new series: Behind the Business.

Behind the Business with TheStylist LA

What: Founded in 2009, TheStylist LA is a designer dress borrowing service that aims to bring stylish clothing to women who wish to dress a certain way, but don't want to buy a new outfit for every occasion. Brands include Naven, Parker, Nightcap, and For Love and Lemons (some of my favorites). Find out more here.

Who: Emily McDonald, founder

What would you say are three keys to success for an emerging brand to get noticed?

1. Find influencers, get them involved with your brand, and have them tag you on social media.
2. Network, network, network! You never know who you will meet that can help spread the word about your company. You will be surprised how many people know influential people and how happy they are to introduce you!
3. Make sure your customer service experience is flawless. When clients love your company and your product they tell their friends. Then their friends tell their friends, and so on. Our most successful advertising is still word of mouth.

If you could describe the brand in three words, what would they be?

Relevant, genuine, and memorable.

What do you see as the greatest opportunities for your brands? What about challenges?

Our greatest opportunity is the number of girls in our target market that would love to rent dresses but they either don't know that renting is an option or they don't know about us.  This is a huge opportunity because we have so many potential customers to reach!

Our biggest challenge is controlling operations as we reach more of this target marjet.  Dress rentals are a bit more difficult than typical purchases because the dresses have to be returned and dry cleaned in between each wear. This means there are more steps that need to be controlled and kept organized.  We are working on perfecting our operations but it is a constantly changing challenge.

What is the biggest goal TheStylist LA is trying to reach for 2014 and beyond?

Our biggest goal is to keep growing and help even more girls find the perfect dress!

Thanks so much for stopping by Emily! Stay tuned for more of this series next week.
