Workout, Mama.

2/13/2014

Guess what? I never have time to workout. I know a few of my mama friends who wake up at 4:30am to go to the gym. I am in awe of these people. I know why they do it. It's their alone time. It's that blissful hour that they get to themselves before complete chaos ensues (a really special shout out to my friend Kat who has three kids and runs and in-home day care). But I am not one of these people and I know I never will be. I literally want to hide under the covers each morning and hope no one finds me there. "I'm sick, mom...can I skip parenting for the day?" Oh wait, I'm the mom.

I digress. One day I was feeling particularly lunky (is that a word...it is what it sounds like anyway; lumpy and chunky). I was sitting there stuffing goldfish in my mouth in between feeding Phoenix and watching Mila torment the dog and I thought: I need exercise. It's seriously good for the body and the mind. So at that moment I made a plan. Ten minutes. Every day. This is not a lot of time I realize, but it's about what I have time for and it means I don't have to get up at 4:30am. Fun!

As luck would have it, there's YouTube and there's also this amazing thing called Pop Sugar Fitness. Doesn't the name just make you want to put on your cute little Lulumon pants and tank and hop to it? It's the first thing I do after I put the kids down for their afternoon nap. Sometimes no one naps and that was my ten minutes, but sometimes I get an extra hour, sometimes even an hour and half (!!!) and I can go about eating lunch, answering emails, cleaning the kitchen (wtf is that??), prepping dinner, etc.

To be honest it has really saved me. The thing about being a mom is that you have very little time to yourself. Sometimes it's zero. Sometimes it's negative five if your baby is waking up multiple times a night. But a friend told me the other day: "Make that time, Lex. It's good for you. AND it's good for your family. It makes you be a better mom." Agreed.

Do you have kids? What's your workout routine?

Here's one of my favorite routines. Fat blast! Hooray!

Here are tons of Pop Sugar Fitness videos. Ten minutes and longer ones too!

Thanks for the shout out! I feel famous! And slightly insane- I still cannot believe how early I get up. One day, in the far far future, I may be able to sleep in again.....

So awesome...I will have to check this out. I am also loving the Workout Mama boot camps. I get them done in the mornings and once on the weekends and it really does make a difference!

I devote a good amount of time on Wednesday and Sunday evenings to exercise, but it's so tough for me to make 15 minutes on all the other days–and it really shouldn't be!

Good for you. I know its hard to juggle everything, but making the time for yourself is so important, even just ten minutes a day. I love www.toneitup.com. They have free youtube workouts too!

Thanks for introducing me to this!! Not a mom---YET! :) 11 days and counting! Lol. But--exercising has always been super important for me. I love it. And I'm curious about how this will all work once I have the baby. Also, can we talk about the 4:30 thing? 4:30!!!! Oh my word. I'm with u on that. Good job to them...but I just can't. Haha.

a happy mom means a happy family for sure. Yeay, so glad you are working out again. This is wonderful. I go thru phases, I will be really good for like 6 months and then I'm bad for a couple....I think it coincides with the school year....summer is never good. Once the kiddos start school it will be so much better. I love doing yoga and going for long walks! and biking!

I hate working out, but I've been forcing myself into it this week and I am noticing that I have more energy. Maybe there's something to this... ;-)

I can't wait to check this out when I have a chance!

I'm like you, there's no way I'm getting up super early to work out when I don't generally get a full night's sleep in the first place.

Lately I've been squeezing in Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred when my toddler needs a change of pace in the morning. I;ll bring her up to my room with me, set her up with her dollhouse and go. It's usually the perfect amount of time (about 20 minutes) before she's looking for something new to do.

amazing - thanks for sharing! i also love jillian michaels 30 day series - they're 20 minutes, but closer to 30 if you include warm up and stretching.

Even 10 minutes is better than nothing, and I'm sure you are already seeing and feeling the difference, so keep going!!! I always check out their videos too, great ideas for exercises!
