Five Places You Must Visit

10/09/2013

1. Cinque Terre, Italy. It's true, it has gotten more touristy over the years, but that doesn't take away from it's small village charm. Situated on the Ligurian Sea, surrounded by lemon groves, the area consists of five separate villages connected by train and a lovely walking path. Sit by the harbor at night and order a dish of fried anchovies and pasta while sipping on a cool glass of Vino delle Cinque Terre. You'll think you are dreaming.

2. Ubud, Bali. Intricate old temples mingle with lush tropical foliage and miles of brilliant green rice paddies. Colorful artwork and handmade wooden treasures line the streets of this breathtaking little town, and if there is a place where people are more generous and welcoming I haven't met it yet.

3. Mendoza, Argentina. Dusty roads lined with colorful old trees weave paths between gigantic winery estates and small, rustic family restaurants. Rent a bike for the day and map your route, consuming glasses of rich malbec and platters of bread dipped in fresh olive oil. Your taste buds will surely thank you.

4. Abel Tasman Park, New Zealand. I could fill twenty albums with all of our New Zealand photos, and honestly every little corner of this South Pacific country is begging to be visited, but Abel Tasman Park is a feast for the eyes. Be sure to rent a kayak and sail through turquoise waves, then hike the area's many trails for stunning vistas like the one above. Someone once told me New Zealand was God's country, and I believe that it is.

5. The Swiss Alps. The towns of Murren, Wengen and Gimmelwald are corners of the Earth that have seemingly ignored the fast-paced way of modern life. They sit dwarfed by magnificent snow-capped peaks and the crisp, quiet air is interrupted only by the ding of a cow's bell. They are, in some ways, the stuff fairy tales are made of.

I was in Cinque Terre when Italy won the World Cup in 2004. Me and my girlfriends (who were there on a college graduation trip) celebrated by skinny dipping in the ocean. Ahhh a night of youth I will never soon forget!

I've never been to any of these locales. They all look and sound so magical. I'm hoping to visit Italy next year and Cinque Terre is a must.

Italy is on my "see you next summer" list (squeeee!) and Switzerland is way up on my to-do list too. I have Bali on there, but for some reason it feels like an "in another lifetime" place and I'm not sure why... Someday.

I have been two of these five....and loved them so I know I will love the other three. There are so many places I want to travel to....even ones I have already been to. I'm dying now to take my daughter to Paris and london! Maybe next summer we can do one of those.
