Bon Appetite: Q'ero

3/01/2012

I've been hearing about Q'ero ever since moving to Encinitas, and finally tried the Peruvian/South American eatery a few weeks ago. Daniela, McKenzie and I sipped sangria (some of the best I've ever had - I think it was the nutmeg) and shared some (OK a lot of) small plates. Unless you count empanadas (which we devoured before I had time to snap a photo), I hadn't really tried this type of cuisine before, but I found some new favorites: Llapingacho (potato cake filled with fontina cheese, a specialty from Ecuador) and Maduros (caramelized ripe sweet plantains topped with sour cream and scallions) and will definitely be back!

My aunt lived there for a long time and I would stay with her every summer (now she is in oceanside) when i was in high school :) Fond memories...don't know if it is still there, by Raul's was the BEST hole in the wall Mexican shack! Oh my mouth is watering big time. I love maduros and Llapingachos. Nutmeg in the Sangria? Hmmmm, never heard of that one, must investigate. I often make Sangria for our Friday night game nights and like to change it up once in a while.
