Bon Appetit: Voce Del Mare

4/28/2011

While we've already been reviewing local restaurants, we decided to take it a step further and compile our reviews into a new series called Bon Appetit. We will be focusing on local eateries (in the San Diego area), but may branch out on the occasion that Kirby or I take a vacation. Our first stop on the Bon Appetit tour was right down the hill from my house, in Birdrock.

Voce Del Mare offers authentic Italian fare (and I don't just mean the waiters, who all happen to speak Italian, the chef recently arrived straight from Italy). We rushed in just in time for the last few minutes of Happy Hour, which is from 4 to 6 and ordered two glasses of crisp Sauvignon Blanc to go with our patate fritti and garlic butter balls. Both were fabulous, though I have to say that I'm pretty much game when it comes to the garlic butter combo. Kirby kindly split the last one in half (hey I'm a breastfeeding mom okay...so I could have eaten ten more?)

Next we ordered more wine (obviously). I went with Pinot Noir and Kirby decided on Chianti. Both were wonderful choices that paired nicely with our dinners (for me the Ricotta and Spinach Ravioli and for Kirby Shrimp and Walnut Pasta in a Pink Sauce.

The restaurant offered a great ambiance, including live piano music and frankly would be a great place for a first date. Or if you aren't seeing anyone, a great place to find a first date...hello Italian men!

All in all I have to say this was buonissimo. Complimenti alla chef!

Voce Del Mare is located in Birdrock at 5217 La Jolla Boulevard.
